Help and FAQ

Answers to common questions about joining, the server content, your profile and getting help from staff.

Getting started

  • How do I join the server?

You need Garry's Mod on Steam. The How to join page has a one-click connect button, plus steps for the server browser and the console.

  • Do I need to download anything before joining?

No. The server's content downloads automatically when you join. Steam Workshop downloads aren't always reliable though, so to be sure everything loads, subscribe to everything on the server content page before your first join and Garry's Mod downloads it in the background.

  • I can see missing textures or ERROR models. How do I fix it?

That means some of the server's content hasn't downloaded or loaded properly.

    • Type /content in chat in game for fixes that mount the content again.
    • Subscribe to everything on the server content page.
    • Restart Garry's Mod and wait for the downloads to finish.
    • If it still happens, unsubscribe from the content pack and subscribe again.

Still broken after all of that? Report a bug and say what is missing and where.

  • How can I tell if the server is online?

The status page shows whether the server is up, how many people are playing and its uptime over the last 90 days.

  • What do I need to play?

Just Garry's Mod on Steam. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The server's content downloads when you join, but downloading the server content yourself first is more reliable.

  • Who can play on the server?

Everyone is welcome, and there is no whitelist or application. You need to be 13 or older (we recommend 16 or older) and to follow the server rules. The server is English speaking, so use English in voice and text chat so everyone can follow.

  • Do I need a microphone?

A microphone is recommended, since a lot of the roleplay happens over voice, but it isn't required.

  • How much does Garry's Mod cost?

The How to join page shows the current Steam price in pounds, euros and dollars. If it's on sale it shows the discount, and otherwise when the next Steam seasonal sale starts.

  • I can't find the server in the server browser.

In Garry's Mod, choose Find Multiplayer Game and open the MilitaryRP gamemode first, then search. Searching from the main list only searches gamemode categories. You can also use the connect button on the How to join page.

  • Can I join from the console?

Yes. Turn on the developer console under Options, Keyboard, Advanced, press the key below Esc and type the connect command shown on the How to join page.

  • How do I add the server to my favourites?

Open Steam, choose View, then Game Servers, go to Favourites and add the server address shown on the How to join page.

  • How big is the content download?

The server content page shows the size of every pack and addon, and the total. You only download it once; after that Steam only downloads changes.

  • My downloads are stuck or very slow.

    • Check the Downloads page in Steam, since Workshop items download there.
    • Make sure you have enough free disk space.
    • Restart Steam, then start Garry's Mod again.
    • If one item keeps failing, unsubscribe from it and subscribe again.
  • The server is full. What can I do?

The status page shows how many people are playing and how many slots there are, along with the player history, so you can see when it tends to be quieter.

  • Where is the server hosted?

In Amsterdam, Netherlands (EU West). It's optimised for players in the UK and Europe, and players in the US are welcome too, with a ping that's usually fine for roleplay. Roughly what to expect:

    • UK: 10 to 25 ms
    • Western Europe: 5 to 30 ms
    • US East Coast: 80 to 100 ms
    • US West Coast: 140 to 160 ms

Garry's Mod shows your ping to the server in the server browser.

Your account

  • Do I need to make an account on the website?

No. Your profile is created the first time you join the server. Sign in with Steam to see it and change your settings. There is no password to remember.

  • Why isn't my profile up to date?

Steam details are refreshed regularly. If something looks out of date, you can ask for a refresh once a day from your settings. Garry's Mod playtime and achievements only show if your Steam game details are public.

Your rank, V.I.P status and server stats come from the game server, which updates them when you join and every 15 minutes while you play.

  • How do I link my Discord account?

Sign in, open your settings and choose Link Discord. You can link one Discord account and choose whether it shows on your profile.

  • Can I hide my Discord or game stats?

Yes. Your linked Discord account, your Garry's Mod playtime and achievements, and your place on the leaderboards can each be turned off in your settings. When Garry's Mod stats are off, they aren't fetched from Steam at all.

  • How do I sign in?

Choose Sign in and log in through Steam. Steam only tells us your Steam ID, so we never see your Steam password. There is no separate password for the website.

  • What does my profile show?

Your Steam name, avatar and country, how long you've had your Steam account and any public VAC or game bans, plus your Garry's Mod playtime and achievements if your Steam game details are public. It also shows your rank and V.I.P status from the game server, and a summary of your server bans once you have two or more. See the privacy policy for more.

  • How often is my profile updated?

Players active in the last week are refreshed every day, players active in the last month every few days, and everyone else about once a month. You can also ask for a refresh once a day from your settings.

  • Why can't I find myself on the players list?

Your profile appears once your Steam details have loaded, which usually takes a few seconds after you first join the server or sign in. If it still is not there after a while, ask for a refresh from your settings.

  • How do I unlink my Discord account?

Open your settings and choose Unlink. You can link a different account afterwards.

  • How do I download or delete my data?

Sign in and open your settings. You can download everything we hold about you as a zip file, and delete your account there too.

Deleting your account removes your profile, linked Discord account, appeals, bug reports and the reports you sent while signed in. Your progress on the game server and your entries in the ban history stay, since they're the game server's records. If you join the server again afterwards, you get a fresh account. See the privacy policy for more.

Community

  • Where can I see who is online?

The How to join and status pages show who is on the server, and the Discord page shows who is online in the Discord. Players with a profile are linked to it.

  • How do I join a unit?

Every unit is explained in game, along with anything you need to join it. Find a recruiter for the unit you want and ask them for a tryout. Passing isn't guaranteed, so read up on the unit and its requirements first.

  • Can I apply for an in-game position?

Some in-game positions take applications on the apply page while they are open. For a place in a unit, ask one of its recruiters for a tryout instead.

  • Can I help in other ways?

Yes. If you would like to help with development, mapping, media or anything else, apply under Something else on the apply page. That option is always open.

  • Who are the staff?

The staff page lists the whole staff team by rank.

  • How do I join the staff team?

Apply on the apply page as a Gamemaster or a Moderator. Gamemasters plan and run events, and Moderators handle sits and reports. The apply page shows which roles are open right now, and openings are announced first in our Discord.

We usually have about three Gamemasters for every Moderator, so Gamemaster places open far more often.

  • How do the leaderboards work?

The leaderboards rank players by level, playtime, kills, deaths, kill to death ratio and money, using stats from the game server, which updates them when you join and every 15 minutes while you play. The kill to death ratio board only includes players with at least 25 kills.

You can search for any player and see their real position. To leave the leaderboards, turn off Show me on the leaderboards in your settings.

  • Is there a Steam group?

Yes. Join the Steam group for event invites and group chat on Steam.

  • Where do I find server news?

Updates are posted in our Discord, so joining it is the best way to keep up.

  • Are there events?

Yes. The event schedule shows what's coming up. It can change, but cancellations usually come with at least a full day's notice, apart from emergencies. Events are announced in our Discord, and the Steam group sends event invites.

Gamemasters run events and can change some rules for them, such as lives or the new life rule. They announce any changes at the start, and the changes end with the event.

  • Can I use the MilitaryRP logo?

The branding page has the logo and colours to download.

  • Who made the content on the server?

The credits are kept in game: type /credits in chat, or credits in the console, to see who made the weapons, vehicles, maps and other content on the server. That includes most of what's in the content packs, not just the other addons. The content itself is on the server content page.

Rules and bans

  • Where can I read the server rules?

On the server rules page. The rules are principles rather than a checklist: staff judge whether you went against what a principle is for, not whether you found a gap in its wording.

If you're not sure whether something is allowed, ask staff first. Asking is never punished.

  • How do punishments work?

Every principle has a tier (minor, moderate, serious or severe), and every tier has a fixed ladder of punishments, from a warning up to a ban.

    • Each tier keeps its own count, and offences stop counting after a set time.
    • Staff can move one step up or down for a recorded reason, and nothing more.
    • Every punishment names the principle broken and the step of the ladder.

The punishments section of the rules has the full ladders.

  • Can I stream or record on the server?

Yes. Streaming and recording your own gameplay is fine. Watching someone's stream to find or follow them in game (stream sniping) isn't allowed under play fair.

  • Can I use a bug or exploit I found?

No. Using bugs, glitches or map exploits breaks play fair, and exploiting for an advantage is serious. Report it on the bug report page instead and don't share it with anyone else. Reporting a bug is never punished.

  • Can I have more than one account?

You can own a second account as long as you tell staff about it and never use it to get around the rules. Sharing an account, playing on several at once or using another account while banned or punished is not allowed, and using one to evade a ban is a permanent ban. See one person, one account.

  • Where can I see who has been banned?

The ban history lists every ban the game server records, with the reason, the length and whether it's still in force. You can search it by player, staff member, SteamID64 or reason.

  • How do I appeal a ban?

Sign in with Steam and fill in the form on the ban appeals page. Choose whether you think the ban was a mistake, or you accept you broke the rules and want another chance. Staff review every appeal, and their decision and any message from them show on that page.

If you can't sign in with Steam, the appeals page has an email address you can send your appeal to instead.

  • When can I appeal, and how often?

You can appeal any ban, and send one appeal every 24 hours. Permanent bans for severe offences, such as cheating or evading a ban, can be appealed 30 days after the ban.

Link your Discord account in your settings before you appeal, so staff can message you if they need to.

Getting help

  • How do I get help from staff or report a player?

For help, join our Discord and open a ticket in #create-ticket, under the Tickets category. Include your SteamID64, what happened and roughly when, and any screenshots or clips. See contact us for other options.

If someone is breaking the rules in game right now, report it in game so staff who are online can deal with it. For anything else, or to report a staff member, use the report page. You can report anonymously there without signing in. Bugs go on the bug report page instead.

  • Will staff ever ask for my password?

Never. Staff will never ask for your password, Steam Guard codes or payment details. If anyone does, don't share them and let us know.

  • How can I tell if Steam or Discord is down?

The status page shows the game server, this website and the services we rely on, including Steam, Discord and Cloudflare.

  • How do I report a bug?

Use the bug report page, for bugs on the game server, this website or the Discord. Sign in with Steam, say where it is, what you did and what happened, and add a screenshot or clip if you can. Admins look into every bug report, and you can follow what happens to yours on that page.

If you can't sign in, open a ticket in #create-ticket on our Discord instead.
